Description of Freestyle Wrestling

MALP

Freestyle wrestling is a form or style of amateur wrestling practiced around the world. It is one of the two styles of wrestling in the Olympic games, the other being Greco-Roman. It originated from folkstyle wrestling (catch-as-catch-can wrestling). The main idea for victory is to pin an opponent to the mat.

According to the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA), freestyle wrestling was said to be originated in Great Britain and United States and was first called as "catch-as-catch-can" wrestling, which also developed a Lancashire and Scottish variant. The contestants would start both standing and one would try to hold his opponent's shoulder to the ground. This would be known as a "fall". If there was no fall scored, both wrestlers would countinue to grapple. The Scottish variant, on the other hand, began with wrestlers standing chest-to-chest and their arms were locked around each other's body. If there was no fall, the match would also continue on the ground. Catch-as-catch-can was said to be performed even by U.S. Presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt, Ulysses Grant, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, Zachary Taylor and George Washington.

Conditions For Winning A Freestyle Wrestling Match

MALP

There are several ways in which one can win a Freestyle wrestling match.

  • By Fall
A fall is also known as a pin or sometimes a pin fall. Winning by fall occurs when one wrestler successfully simultaneously holds both of his opponent's shoulders on the mat. The fall should be long enough for the referee to "observe the total control of the fall". The said span of time is around half-a-second to two seconds. The fall is announced or recognized by either the judge or the mat chairman along with the referee. Should the referee not indicate a valid fall, the judge and mat chairman may do this together.
  • By Technical Fall
This involves winning by points. If a wrestler a) gets six points ahead of his opponent at any time in the period, b) scores a five-point throw or scores or c) scores two three-point takedowns, he is declared the winner of the period. Should a wrestler win two out of three periods by the aforementioned points, he wins the match by technical fall.
  • By Decision
Sometimes, neither wrestler can pin, be pinned or scores techincal superiority points at a certain period. At this time, a winner may be declared by decision. This is by adding up the points made by each wrestler during a certain period. The one who scored higher wins the period. Should the scores be tied, a certain criteria is used to determine the winner. These are the number of cautions for penalty, point values (the number of one-, two- or three-point moves) and the last scored technical point. The wrestler who scored the last technical point is usually awarded the period. Should the scores be tied at zero, there will be a 30-second overtime where the wrestlers assume the clinch position and proceed until a point is scored or until one of them breaks the clinch.
  • By Disqualification
Three cautions for a penalty results to disqualification. Ill-mannered behavior or flagrant brutality may also be grounds for disqualification.
  • By Injury
This may also be termed as medical forfeit or injury default. This occurs when a wrestler's injury or health causes him to be unable to continue. Should the injury be caused by an illegal manner, the one at fault is disqualified.
  • By Default
This occurs when a wrestler is unable to continue due to reasons not specified above. It is also the case when an opponent is unable to show up for his match after being called for three times before the match begins.
