Description of Toyama Ryu

MALP

The samurai were a respected and well-known class due to their skill, contribution and principles. This is probably why it was hard for many to believe during 1867 that the samurai class would be abolished as part of the several steps Japan took towards modernization. Although the samurai as a class no longer exist, there are some people who wanted to keep not only their legacy but also their spirit and principles alive.

In 1925, Toyama Ryu Batto Do was established by a committee headed by Nakayama Hakudo, the 16th soke of the Shimomura-faction of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu iaido. It is derived from various techniques, philosophy and concepts from other expert swordsmen, their styles according to era. Toyama Ryu has basic cutting techniques, basic and advanced kata and other forms that focus on the practical application of the sword as a weapon. It not only focuses on sword techniques but also the mental and spiritual knowledge, concepts, beliefs and philosophy of the samurai. The nine principles of bushido (way of the warrior) is part of the training just like how it was during the time of the samurai. The practitioners are expected to practice not only in combat but in everyday life. The following are the nine principles of Bushido:

  • Jin (Benevolence)
  • Gi (Rectitude)
  • Chu (Loyalty)
  • Yu (Courage)
  • Rei (Respect)
  • Chi (Wisdom)
  • Shin (Honesty)
  • Tei (Caring for the aged
  • Meiyo (Honor)
